The problem

What this kind of product has to solve

A great deal of business-critical information still arrives as a scan, a fax, or a PDF built from a photograph. Somebody reads each one and types its contents into a system, and the volume means the work is never finished and the errors are never fully caught.

Extraction tools promise to solve this and then fail in the most damaging way available: by being confidently wrong on the documents that differ from the samples, with no signal that anything went wrong.

The solution concept

How we built it

This concept build demonstrates extraction designed around its own uncertainty. Every extracted field carries a confidence score, and the threshold for automatic acceptance is set per field according to the cost of getting it wrong - an invoice total is held to a far stricter standard than a reference note.

Anything below threshold goes to a review queue where a person sees the extracted value beside the highlighted region of the source document. Confirming or correcting takes seconds, and corrections feed back into the labeled set.

Accuracy is measured against that labeled set per document type and per field, so the reported figure is specific rather than a single marketing number. Documents the system has not seen a template for are identified as unknown rather than processed on a guess.

Engineering decisions

The choices that actually determine whether it works

Each of these could have gone the other way. The reasoning is the part worth reading - it is how we would argue the same case on your project.
  1. 01

    Per-field confidence thresholds

Acceptance thresholds are set by the cost of error, not globally. Treating every field as equally risky either blocks throughput or lets expensive mistakes through.

  2. 02

    Review shows the source region

The reviewer sees the highlighted area of the original document beside the extracted value, turning verification into a glance rather than a hunt.

  3. 03

    Unknown document types are refused

An unrecognized layout is flagged rather than processed. Silent degradation on unfamiliar inputs is this category's characteristic failure.

  4. 04

    Corrections become training data

Every human correction enters the labeled set, so the review queue shrinks over time instead of staying constant.

Intended business value

What this is designed to achieve

  • Intended to shift document handling from full manual entry to review of the uncertain minority, which is where the time saving in this category actually comes from.
  • Designed so accuracy is reported per document type and field against a labeled set, rather than as a single unverifiable headline number.
  • Built so that unfamiliar documents are escalated rather than silently misread - the failure mode that erases the savings when it goes unnoticed.

No outcome figures are shown because this is a concept build with no client deployment behind it. Quoting a percentage here would be fabrication, so we quote nothing.
